Anonymous asked: Hey I am 14 years old and I want dreads. Do you think I am too young ?
Hi, thank you for writing! I don’t think I’m in a position where I can say anything about you or if you are too young to have dreadlocks. I think it really depends on a lot of things - What do your family(especially your parents) and friends think about it? If they like it, think it could be cool then I think it is a better idea. Talk to your peers! It also depends on how thoroughly you’ve thought i through: Have you thought about it for months, researching methods/photos/tips/tricks then I think you are better prepared. Maybe set a goal for yourself, like “If I still want them at my birthday/If I can an A/If I wait for 6 months, I can get them” - I did. Personally I’m glad I didn’t do it at 14, but that being mentioned I was only 16(and my sister was also 16 when she got hers) I just think that waiting makes a bit of a difference and I wouldn’t do it without talking to parents, getting there approval and thinking it through. It should also be mentioned that when they need taking care of, you should be able to do that - My sister had a hard time taking care of them, my cousin who is 8(it was her mother who suggested that it might be really cool to try) of course needs help for all maintenance, so you should consider this aswell! Ultimately, it’s is very much about you as a person, and not as much about the number on your birth certificate! I hope this was helpful!
